FEAST YOUR EYES: DO THE RIGHT THING

Director: SPIKE LEE

120 minutes, U.S.A., 1989, Colour, Blu-ray

Spike Lee’s colourful portrayal of fervid conditions that reach melting point one sweltering summer’s day around Sal’s Famous Pizzeria in Brooklyn is this month’s hot ticket for Feast Your Eyes. Lee plays likeable but laid-back Mookie, who delivers pizzas for Sal, an Italian-American who runs a popular eatery in a predominantly black neighbourhood with his sparring sons, one of whom refuses to curb his racist slurs.

Tensions suggested in the first act reach the surface in the second when Mookie’s friend, Buggin’ Out, notices the photos on Sal’s wall are all of white men. Together with Radio Raheem, who carries a Public Enemy-blasting boom-box throughout, they confront Sal, whereupon pandemonium unfolds. With a cast including Rosie Perez, who holds no punches in a spunky dance routine over the opening credits, this still makes for clamorous viewing. (Notes by Alice Butler.)

This screening will be followed by a complimentary main course of of Italian-American classics in the IFI Cafe Bar: either Pizza Breads with Pepperoni and Parmesan, Meatballs and Spaghetti or Eggplant (Aubergine) Parmesan in the IFI Café Bar! Tickets €20 (free list suspended).
