When a Tamil Tiger finds himself in a refugee camp in the closing days of the Sri Lankan Civil War, the only way he can make a new start for himself is with a more sympathetic cover story. Enlisting a random woman and orphaned child to pose as his family, the three are sent to a housing project in a Parisian suburb. While he is appointed caretaker and she cooks and cleans for an infirm, elderly man whose nephew heads the local gang of drug dealers, their ‘daughter’ must adapt to the complexities of her school environment. Although the main narrative concerns Dheepan (Jesuthasan Antonythasan, an author, activist and former Tamil Tiger himself) being drawn into gang-related violence, the film’s real strengths lie in its depiction of the family members’ developing bonds, and the fresh perspective it brings to a familiar environment.

This month’s main course menu:
Kukul mas curry (Chicken Curry with coconut)
Deviled sweet and sour fish curry
Vegetarian: Parippu (Sri Lankan Dhal Curry)

All the above are served with mixed fried rice and wholemeal roti (bread)
