Fausto

Director: Isidro Oritz, Alex Olle and Carlos Padrisa

2001. Subtitles. Colour. Dolby digital stereo. 94 mins.

Set in the near future, this witty reworking of the Faust story was the first big-screen film production of the renowned Catalan theatre group La Fura dels Baus. In this version, Dr. Faust (played by Argentine actor Miguel Angel Sola) is a top surgeon and a specialist in terminal cancers. Attending a medical conference in Barcelona, he is surprised to encounter a former patient, Santos Vella (Eduard Fernandez), whom he had given only three months to live some eight years ago. Taking the good doctor on a tour into the dark side of the city, the devilish Santos begins to grant Faust all his wishes. Co-directors Isidro Oritz, Alex Olle and Carlos Padrisa take plenty of liberties with the familiar story, but their film is fresh, fast-paced and consistently amusing. Sola is compelling as Faust, but the film is stolen by Catalan actor Fernandez, whose portrayal of Santos is immensely charming.
