The Nutcracker has become one of the world’s most popular ballets and is staged particularly around Christmas time. First performed in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre of Russia in St. Petersburg, it is based on the original story by ETA Hoffman which was adapted by Alexander Dumas and set to music by Tchaikovsky. This unique interpretation was filmed in 2007 and it showcases the eye-catching costumes and startling staging designed by Mikhail Shemiakin, Russian emigre and world-renowned avant-garde artist and sculptor.
