ENTER THE VOID

Director: GASPAR NOÉ

143 minutes, France-Germany-Italy, 2009, English and Japanese dialogue; English subtitles, Colour, 35mm

Specifically acknowledged by Winding Refn in the credits for Only God Forgives, fellow provocateur Gaspar Noé’s Enter the Void is shot entirely from the point of view of its central character as he lives, dies, and is reborn in the neon haze of Tokyo’s seedy underbelly.

Separated as children, drug dealer Oscar now lives in the city with his sister Linda, a stripper. When Oscar is shot and killed in a drug deal gone wrong, his disembodied self follows Linda and his friend Alex as their lives continue without him, all portrayed in a series of dizzyingly complex, balletic camera moves. (Notes by Kevin Coyne.)

Screening as part of Wanna Fight? (August 3rd – 31st), our season recognising the influences on director Nicolas Winding Refn and the roots of Only God Forigves.
