Das Versprechen/The Promise*

GERMAN FILM/DEUTSCHE FILME
With the support of the German Embassy, we are delighted to screen Das Versprechen to mark German Unification Day. This, the first film of our German project, tells the story of Sophie and Konrad, two teenagers intent on escaping into West Berlin during the Communist era. When Konrad gets left behind they are separated by the Berlin Wall for seven years until they meet again in Prague. Political circumstances subsequently keep them apart for 28 years during which they see each other only four times, one of which results in the birth of their son. When the Wall finally comes down in 1989 they get the chance to meet up again. Directed by Margarethe von Trotta, this romantic epic gives an excellent insight into recent German history as well being a powerful story of lost love and missed opportunities.
The First Secretary of the German Embassy, Claudia Schmitz, has kindly agreed to attend the screening.
