DARKLIGHT: WORLDLY DESIRES

Director: APICHATPONG WEERASETHAKUL

SOUTH KOREA-THAILAND • 2004 • SUBTITLED • COLOUR • DIGITAL VIDEO • 40 MIN.

Independent Thai film-maker Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s international breakthrough came with the features Blissfully Yours(2002) and Tropical Malady(2004), both of which won prizes at Cannes. His latest is an experimental featurette about a film crew in a forest shooting a romance during the day and music videos at night. Apichatpong describes the results as ‘a small simulation of manners, dedicated to the memories of film-making in the jungle. I picked a pop song, ‘Will I Be Lucky?’ to convey a sense of the guiltless freedom one feels when being hit by love.’

Plus: BANGKOK EXPERIMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL: ‘TSUNAMI PROGRAMME’ Founded in 1996, the Bangkok Experimental Film Festival aims to create an alternative cinematic experience for audiences by presenting works from local and international film-makers. We’ll be screening the festival’s ‘Tsunami Programme’ of six short works made by Thai and Malayan film-makers in response to the recent Tsunami in Asia. (DURATION 70 min.)
