Kevin Costner’s directorial debut about an idealistic young Civil War soldier returns to the Comparative Study for 2005. Costner stars as Lt John Dunbar who makes friends with a Sioux Indian tribe and eventually becomes one of them. The film offers several possibilities for discussion of literary genre as well as cultural context and themes of gender, and loyalty.
