In The Curse (aka Under a Spell), director Carlos Carrera adapts a best selling Mexican novel, Don Eliseo, into a sprawling saga of Hispanic life set against the Mexican Revolution of the 1920s. Carrera incorporates labour disputes, social changes and the beginning of a sexual revolution in this powerful, involving look at a young man, his family, his first forbidden love and (in the film’s last half) his wife and family.
