Crash

Director: David Cronenberg

James Spader and Holly Hunter stars as survivors of a road accident who subsequently become attracted to each other and get involved with a gang of crash victims who make love in cars, watch videos of pile-ups, and even reconstruct celebrated car smashes. At the centre of this weird, subterranean group is crazed scientist Vaughan (Elias Koteas), who fantasises about the ultimate, semi-erotic synthesis of man and machine. Dark, disturbing and almost clinically dispassionate, Cronenberg’s adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s novel was always going to be controversial. Looking beyond all that, however, it’s undoubtedly a serious, intelligent movie which tackles head-on some important issues surrounding our obsession with the automobile.
