BOB FOSSE: SWEET CHARITY

Director: Bob Fosse

149 mins, USA, 1969, Digital 4K

Triple threat Shirley McClaine sings, acts and dances her way through director Bob Fosse’s colourful first feature as Charity, a hopeless romantic working in a seedy dance hall under the wings of her co-workers (Paula Kelly and Chita Rivera). After a failed job interview, she gets trapped in a broken lift with sweet but claustrophobic Oscar (John McMartin) and suddenly things are looking up. Based on Fellini’s Nights of Cabiria, Sweet Charity overflows with showstoppers from ‘Big Spender’ to the often imitated ‘Rich Man’s Frug’, the deliciously over-the-top ‘I’m a Brass Band’, and Sammy Davis Jr.’s ‘The Rhythm of Life’.

Screening as part of our Bob Fosse season, June 9th to 30th.
