Blind Beast [aka Warehouse]

Director: Masumura Yasuzo

Japan 1969. English subtitles. Colour. Anamorphic. 86 min.

Blind Beast is an intense, no-holds-barred exploration of perversion, art and sado-masochism. With the aid of his mother, a blind sculptor kidnaps and imprisons a young fashion model as a muse for his efforts to sculpt the perfect form. Set in a Dali-esque artist’s studio covered in sculptures of giant eyeballs, over-sized limbs and assorted body parts, this incredibly inventive tale of madness and sexual obsession powers to a climax that prefigures Nagisa Oshima’s In the Realm of the Senses while recalling Georges Franju’s Eyes Without a Face. A call-to-arms for Outsider Art.
