Barbecue-Pejo

Directed by Jean Odoutan, this is an acclaimed black comedy from the African country of Benin. A young peasant, Boubacar, owns a corn field but wants to break freeof his wretched existence. He sells his field and uses the money to buy a broken-down Peugeot 504. Boubacar wishes to become a bush taxi driver, but his dream is frustrated when the old jalopy dies on him. He is ruined, and his wife is forced into prostitution to meet the family’s needs. But Boubacar proves to be a resourceful, philosophical man. He strips the car down and uses the engine as a barbecue to sell grilled corn in the streets. His hopes of becoming rich are renewed.
