Director: Gints Zilbalodis

75 mins, 2019, Latvia, Digital

This film was released on the 28th of August 2020, and is no longer screening.

A boy is travelling across a deserted island on a motorcycle, trying to evade the looming advances of a giant spirit. He has been marooned on this surreal landscape following a plane crash, and is desperately trying to find a means of returning to civilisation. Besides a little bird, whom he befriends, and a pack of feral cats, the only other inhabitant on the island is the giant who will pursue the boy relentlessly until it can swallow him whole. The multiple award-winning Away took the prestigious Contrechamp Award at Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2019. Director and animator Gints Zilbalodis worked on all aspects of the minimalist, evocative, dialogue-free film for three and a half years, writing the story, creating the animated landscapes and characters, and composing and recording the music.
