An hallucinogenic comedy hit from the co-creators of Airbag, Holy Mary! is the weird tale of an alcoholic loser who becomes a beloved prophet. Mariano (Karra Elejalde) is a travelling salesman who haunts the backroads of Spain, selling crap cassettes to flea-bitten dives. Falling asleep while driving late one night, he sends his car off the road and into a field whichis part of a marijuana farm. The local police set fire to the illicit crop, and the billows of smoke have a powerful effect on Mariano, who imagines he has seen an apparition of the Virgin Mary. Word of this ‘holy vision’ travels to local evangelist Sister Trini (Gloria Muñoz’), and Mariano begins to attract a number of followers. As a sect develops, con-man and self-styled spiritual seeker Tony Towers (Fernando Guillen Cuervo) develops a scheme to build a ‘holy shrine’ that will help him separate na•ve country folk from their cash. Cheech and Chong meet The Life of Brian in this irreverent social satire, which was written and directed by lead actors Elejalde and Cuervo.
