De Heer’s latest film is a highly original and challenging psychosexual thriller about the politics of marriage. When dull office worker Steve (Gary Sweet) comes home from work on his birthday, he finds no presents or welcoming family but a video recording in which his wife (Helen Buday) tells him where it all went wrong. We are taken deep into the most intimate aspects of a relationship, its sexual battlefield, with uncompromising candour. Sweet and Buday deliver extraordinary performances in which they expose their very souls as well as their bodies. Moving from the expansive outdoor vistas of The Tracker to the claustrophobic interiors of a suburban house, de Heer again demonstrates his cinematic skills as he relentlessly depicts the screws turning on the hapless male protagonist as his avenging wife punishes and humiliates him.
