Absolute Beginners

This was one of Palace’s most notable and spectacular follies. As adapted for the screen by former pop-promo director Julien Temple, Colin MacInnes’s cult novel about life on the edge in Soho and Notting Hill of the late 1950s is transformed into a camp modern musical. The bizarre casting and especially Temple’s astonishingly inventive staging are a pleasure, but Palace were roundly criticised for not delivering the film that was promised in the pre-publicity.

U.K., 1986.
With: Eddie O’Connell, Patsy Kensit, David Bowie.
