One of the year’s strongest British films, featuring magnificent performances from its three leads, Apostasy draws from writer-director Daniel Kokotajlo’s own experiences as a Jehovah’s Witness to create a low-key but utterly absorbing depiction of the conflict between spiritual and secular obligations.

This intelligent and affecting film is respectful of these beliefs even as it asks wider questions on fundamentalism and free will.
