Happy New Year and welcome to 2017!
The year has turned and that means that twelve months of fresh cinema releases are just waiting to be discovered and here at the IFI we can’t wait to show them to you.
Before all that, let’s take a look back for a moment at the biggest films to grace our screens in 2016. It was a huge year for the IFI and for Irish film in general, with locally made projects gaining massive national and international attention.
Cinema audience numbers were up on 2015 too, and we can’t wait to welcome even more in 2017. For now, here’s a rundown of the top 10 films at the IFI from last year, many of which are available in the IFI Shop right now.
1. ROOM 2. A DATE FOR MAD MARY 3. SPOTLIGHT 4. NOCTURNAL ANIMALS 5. SING STREET 6. I, DANIEL BLAKE 7. LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP 8. MAGGIE’S PLAN 9. CAFE SOCIETY 10. PATERSON
It was a hugely impressive year for Irish productions, with Room, A Date for Mad Mary, Sing Street and Love and Friendship. And Irish audiences were out in force supporting these projects. Award glory was on the cards too, as Room earned a Best Actress Oscar for Brie Larson back at the beginning of 2016.
Spotlight has an Irish connection too in its topical and emotional subject matter while Tom Ford’s long awaited return to the big screen with Nocturnal Animals went down a storm with viewers. I, Daniel Blake is a powerful piece from dramatic master Ken Loach. And directors like Woody Allen and Jim Jarmusch also gain pride of place in our list.
Our 2017 programme is already in full swing, take a look at our list of three must-see films for January right here.
