VICTORIA Director: SEBASTIAN SCHIPPER 138 minutes, Germany, 2015, Digital, Subtitled Book cinema tickets This film was released 1st April 2016, and is no longer screening. ★★★★ The Irish Times ★★★★★The Independent Victoria (Laia Costa), a young Spanish woman recently moved to Berlin, meets Sonne (Frederick Lau) and his friends clubbing one night. After some time walking through the city with them, Sonne accompanies her to the restaurant in which she works, and which she must soon open. His friends follow, but with one of them now unconscious, the group faces a problem as they were due to carry out a bank robbery that night for a local gangster. Victoria impulsively agrees to take his place, and events continue to unfold unexpectedly. Unlike, for example, Hitchcock’s Rope (1948) or Iñárritu’s Birdman (2014), Sebastian Schipper’s lm really was shot in a single, uninterrupted take. Despite this undeniably impressive feat, which makes for a thrillingly kinetic experience, Victoria never loses sight of the characters at its heart, creating a seamless balance between the visceral and the smaller, more tender moments.
