BROTHERS

Director: JIM SHERIDAN

105 minutes| U.S.A.| 2009| Colour| Anamorphic| 35mm

This film was released 22nd January 2010, and is no longer screening.

A remake of the 2004 Danish film Brødre, directed by Susanne Bier, Sheridan was on much more comfortable terrain with this American production than he had been with the 50 Cent vehicle Get Rich or Die Tryin’. If the characters seem familiar – a towering but flawed father, a son trapped in his social role, another, the family waster, just released from prison, and a young wife already defined by her motherhood – the setting is new. Ranging from Taliban-controlled Afghanistan to suburban America, the film is most telling when it comes to the small details of home life: a family dinner unwinds with excruciating embarrassment to the sound of a child scratching a balloon, the traumatised Marine obsessively rearranges glasses in his kitchen cupboard. The Hollywood stars were evidently comfortable with Sheridan, and Jake Gyllenhaal turns in a show-stealer opposite Toby Maguire and Natalie Portman. But it is child actress Bailee Madison whose performance is truly outstanding.
