Top Spanish actor Luis Tosar (soon to be seen in Jim Jarmusch’s The Limits of Control) plays Spleen, a thirty-something dreamer, armchair philosopher and dandy who has vague plans to leave his mother and the family umbrella repair business to travel to Mexico. Living in the town of Santiago de Compostela, where it has been raining for three months, Spleen’s passions in life are The Smiths and bad girls with fringes. When the rain stops, Spleen meets a mysterious woman with a fringe at his regular haunt The Dramatists’ Tavern. La Rusa (Nora Tschirner) and Spleen share a night of passion and drama which leads to a violent and melodramatic resolution.

Tosar is excellent as the dreamer who refuses to grow up and accept adult responsibilities. He makes Spleen an extremely likeable and sincere character whose foibles and naivety are more amusing than annoying. The film’s first half is very funny, but once the couple’s romance begins the tone becomes much darker.
