IT’S NOW OR NEVER

Director: JON BANG CARLSEN

DENMARK • 1996 • 44 MIN

A lonely sheep farmer in his fifties employs the services of a matchmaker to find a wife. Out in his small country farm-house in the fields of Co Clare with his dog and neighbouring bachelor farmer for company, he makes up his mind, spruces himself up and goes in search of ‘a woman who can milk cows and look after general farm-work… a handy-sized woman, round the 10 stone mark, reasonable in looks; nice personality’. Hilarious, elegiac and beautifully shot by Donal Gilligan, Carlsen’s film provides a remarkably insightful portrait of isolation in rural Ireland.Plus: HOW TO INVENT REALITY (DIRECTOR – JON BANG CARLSEN). In How To Invent Reality Carlsen reveals the extent to which he has orchestrated the comings and goings of the characters in It’s Now Or Never, a film that claims documentary status despite having a script, storyboards and a dream sequence.
