Derek Jarman was 36 years old when punk broke, too past it and too middle-class to be embraced by gobbing urchins preaching anarchy. Yet his fascination with what was going on in London and with the new aesthetic of the time inspired him to explore it. With Sex Pistols acolyte Jordan and future pop stars Adam Ant and Toyah Wilcox in key roles, Jubilee presents Queen Elizabeth I looking into the future, only to see a kingdom populated by pretty boys, murderous girl gangs and vicious police squads.

Sly, satirical and with a great soundtrack that features a memorable version of Rule Britannia, Jubilee is a precious document of the period and a glorious example of punk cinema. (Notes by Michael Hayden.)
