DYING IN SAN HILARIO Director: Laura Maña SPAIN 2005 SUBTITLED. COLOUR DOLBY DIGITAL STEREO 103 MIN. Book cinema tickets A witty, charming concept is given the full treatment in Dying in San Hilario, an oddball piece of whimsy in which director Laura Maña returns to the magical realist terrain of her widely praised debut, Compassionate Sex. San Hilario’s toad-like mayor Mariano (Ulises Dumont) is seeking to revive the town’s reputation as a place where people go to die happy. Following a failed bank robbery, crook German (Lluis Homar) escapes with the booty and jumps from a train at the godforsaken pueblo, where he is surprised to find the townspeoplewho are waiting for someone else named Germangiving him a warm welcome. From then on it’s classic mistaken identity fare as German edges toward redemption and becomes involved with a widow, a doubting priest and wannabe artist Teodoro (Ferran Rañe, giving the film’s standout performance).
