A prize-winner at Cannes when Quentin Tarantino was president of the jury, Old Boy continues on from director Park Chan-wook’s Sympathy for Mr.Vengeance as another story of revenge and the dementia it induces in the central protagonist. Dae-su (an amazing performance by Choi Min-sik) is mysteriously kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years by persons unknown. His sudden release from captivity is just as puzzling, and hardened by his incarceration, Dae-su embarks on a murderous quest to solve the mystery. Teaming up with a pretty sushi chef, he finally discovers a very odd businessman and former school pal who is pulling the strings. But no plot synopsis prepares one for the unforgettable journey Park takes us on, shocking us with murder, mayhem, horrific dentistry and much else besides. It’s not a film for the squeamish, but its brilliant technique and cunning structure are undeniably impressive.
