Gypo is a splendid example of filmmaking that has an exact idea of what it wants to achieve, and how; it wastes nothing. Told from three perspectives, it follows the experiences of Helen and Paul, a working-class couple in England, and how their lives are transformed by the arrival of Tasha, a young Czech refugee, brought home one day by the their 18-year-old daughter. The newcomer inspires a stream of racist invective from the husband (a ferocious Paul McGann), but evokes a much warmer response from Helen (Pauline McLynn) who, as she grows closer to Tasha, begins to sense the possibility of changing her own life. – Edinburgh Film Festival Programme
