BUUD YAM Director: GASTON KABORÉ 97 minutes, Burkina Faso, 1997, Subtitled, Colour, DVD Book cinema tickets The Empire Strikes Back was even better than Star Wars; the second Godfather film is even better than the first; and this sequel is even better than Gaston Kaboré’s previous one, Wend Kuuni. The first film, set in the 19th century, was about a mute boy who was found outside a village and named Wend Kunni, which means “gift from God”; and in it we heard of his tragic life. Now Wend Kunni has grown up. He rides horses like the wind. His adopted sister is sick. He sets out on a journey to find a healer for her, but also because the villagers suspect that he is the cause of her sickness. It’s the vitality of the young man that appeals, and the beauty of Kaboré’s filming. In recent years he has set up a film school in Burkina Faso called Imagine. Kaboré is a legend and one of the nicest men in cinema. Screening as part of Stories From Africa (October6th – 22nd). Director: GASTON KABORÉ 97 minutes, Burkina Faso, 1997, Subtitled, Colour, DVD
