Irish Film Institute -NEW HOLLYWOOD SEASON

NEW HOLLYWOOD SEASON

The emergence of films such as the violent Bonnie And Clyde (Arthur Penn, 1967) and overtly sexual The Thomas Crown Affair (Norman Jewison, 1968) signalled a shift in mainstream American cinema and a new Hollywood. In the ‘70s, sacred cows continued to fall as Chinatown (Roman Polanski, 1974) tackled corruption amongst the wealthy elite, Three Days Of The Condor (Sydney Pollack, 1975) captured the mood of the country post-Nixon in its portrayal of the military-industrial complex, while Network (Sidney Lumet, 1976) savaged the role of the media in contemporary American society. These films also saw the emergence of a new class of actor, many of whom became iconic, such as Warren Beatty, Robert Redford, and Faye Dunaway.
