WILD STRAWBERRIES: GOSFORD PARK Director: Robert Altman 137 minutes, U.K./U.S.A., 2001, Comedy/Drama/Mystery Book cinema tickets Wild Strawberries is our bimonthly film club for the over 55s. Anyone suffering Downton Abbey withdrawal symptoms can get their period drama fix from our special screening of one of the finest in the genre, 10 years since its release. Masterful direction by Robert Altman and scripted by Downton’s Julian Fellowes, it’s a period country house piece combined with an Agatha-Christie-style whodunnit set in 1939 and starring some of Britain’s finest actors including Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Kristin Scott Thomas and Jeremy Northam. As is usual with these stories, what happens above stairs is mirrored by what goes on below but what makes the film so engrossing is Altman’s direction of this broad ensemble, shifting between the servants multifarious activities to a chattering, piano-filled drawing-room scene where the mood is suddenly pierced by a scream… €3.85 including regular tea/coffee before the screening Director: Robert Altman 137 minutes, U.K./U.S.A., 2001, Comedy/Drama/Mystery
