THE BIGGER PICTURE: OUT OF SIGHT

Director: Steven Soderbergh

123 mins, USA, 1998, Digital

George Clooney is Jack Foley, a career bank robber on the run after breaking out of a Florida prison in Steven Soderbergh’s endlessly thrilling, sexy, and ultra-cool adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s novel. In the melee of the breakout, Foley briefly kidnaps US Marshall Karen Sisco (Jennifer Lopez); sparks fly when they are forced to share the trunk of a getaway car, an undeniable chemistry that will complicate Sisco’s ensuing mission to bring the charming rogue to book. Clooney’s old-school star wattage has never been more expertly employed, and his scenes with Lopez positively crackle with sexual tension. A crossover success, Out of Sight saw Soderbergh, a poster boy for the American independent scene, bring his wit, personality, and formal elegance to bear upon a more mainstream proposition, with dazzling results.

The screening will be introduced by Luke Dunne, founder and editor of Film in Dublin.
