IFI FAMILY FESTIVAL 2024: IT’S OKAY!

Director: Kim Hye-Young

102 mins, South Korea, 2023, Drama, Korean with English subtitles, Digital

Winner of the Crystal Bear at Berlin Film Festival, this hugely appealing film is set in the competitive dance world of Seoul Dance Academy. When feisty student In-Yuong finds herself homeless, following the death of her mother, she secretly sets up camp in the school basement, until her perfectionist teacher, Seol-ah, finds her there, and offers her a temporary room. In-Yuong can’t believe her luck, eagerly moving in; at the same time she has to face down the bullies in her dance class and prepare for a big show. Amid school life, comfort food and an oddball friendship developing between teacher and pupil, the story unfolds with humour and tenderness, featuring a terrific lead performance. Brilliant dance and drumming sequences light up this unique, irresistible story of bravery and resilience.
