THE BIGGER PICTURE: LES DEMOISELLES DE ROCHEFORT (The Young Girls of Rochefort) Director: JACQUES DEMY 125 mins, France, 1967, Blu-Ray, Subtitled Please enable cookies if you want to view this trailer Book cinema tickets With a certain pink world due to dominate in July, our Bigger Picture guest, writer Anna Carey, has selected Jacques Demy’s candy-coloured musical, starring real-life sisters Catherine Deneuve and the late Françoise Dorleac as the two young women in a small seaside town longing for romance and adventure in the big city. It’s a singing and dancing confection, for which Demy builds on the success of his previous film, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, including another score by Michael Legrand and shooting on location in especially painted, beautiful Rochefort. Feminine and exuberant, with nods to great Hollywood musicals, the film was restored by Demy’s wife, the great Agnès Varda who appears in a tiny role. The screening will be introduced by writer Anna Carey. Notes by Alicia McGivern Director: JACQUES DEMY 125 mins, France, 1967, Blu-Ray, Subtitled Please enable cookies if you want to view this trailer
