Following horror musical The Lure (2015) and amnesiac identity drama Fuga (2018), Polish director Agnieszka Smoczyńska has begun to create a strong and eclectic body of work. Further evidence of her continued refusal to be pigeonholed can be seen in her first English language film, The Silent Twins, a biopic of Welsh twins June (Letitia Wright) and Jennifer (Tamara Lawrance) Gibbons. As members of the only black family in the neighbourhood, the girls were severely bullied and ostracised as children, becoming more and more withdrawn to the point where they refused to speak to practically anyone but each other. However, the two had rich inner lives, expressing themselves through reams of imaginative composition. As their behaviour turns to violence that leads to incarceration, the two must find a way to exist in a world they understand poorly in this tender and sad film. Preview screening as part of Kinopolis Polish Film Festival on Thursday 8th at 18.30. There will be Open Captioned screenings at 20.40 on Tuesday 13th and 13.00 on Thursday 15th.
