IFI OPEN DAY AND 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE IFI

The Irish Film Institute marks the 30th Anniversary of its home in Temple Bar by throwing its doors to the public with a full day of free films and activities

IFI Open Day  – Saturday, September 10th


The IFI is delighted to announce an Open Day to take place on Saturday, September 10th, where audiences of all ages can drop into the IFI in Temple Bar and immerse themselves in a day of free cinematic treats. The jam-packed day will offer free film screenings and tours of behind-the-scenes activities at IFI. 

Celebrating 30 years of its main home at Eustace Street in Temple Bar, the IFI Open Day is a key event in the cultural calendar. This is a chance for film fans to sample a specially curated programme of films that represents the wide range of cinema that is on offer at the IFI all year round. The day will provide a window into some of the activities that happen at IFI across its three core areas of film exhibition, preservation and education.

This year’s programme of free screenings includes classics, previews and carefully curated Irish film, from Jean-Luc Godard’s The Image Book to Stanley Kubrik’s 2001: A Space Odyssey screened on luminous 70mm; and Frank Borzage’s Academy Award-winning 7th Heaven to Geraldine Creed’s The Sun, The Moon and The Stars. Paul Newman stars in ‘60s witty romantic drama The Hustler, and actor-director Vincent Gallo takes centre screen in Buffalo 66.

IFI Director/ CEO Ross Keane, said today “We are delighted to be marking the 30th anniversary of the IFl’s home in Temple Bar by throwing open our doors to audiences old and new for a day of free films and events. There is no better way to mark this milestone anniversary of the home of film in Ireland than by celebrating and thanking the loyal audiences who have supported us in the past and by inviting in new audiences who will undoubtedly continue to do so in the future. The programme scheduled throughout the day will represent the breadth of the IFI’s activities across film exhibition, preservation and education. We look forward to this day of celebration of one of Ireland’s most cherished cultural institutions”.

In addition to free screenings of old favourites and archive gems, Open Day visitors will also have a chance to learn about the incredible preservation, digitisation and restoration work of the IFI Irish Film Archive team at the ever-popular ‘Ask the Archivists’ desk. There will also be a rare opportunity to take a highly-sought-after trip to our Projection Booth.

Tickets for each film will be distributed in the IFI Foyer one hour before each screening starts. Places on Projection Booth tours and IFI Irish Film Archive tours can only be reserved by emailing info@irishfilm.ie or by calling 01 679 5744 – email subject line should include either ‘Open Day: Projection Booth’ or ‘Open Day: Archive Tour’. All screenings and tours are strictly on a first-come, first-served basis, so arrive early to avoid disappointment!

There will also be annual IFI Membership available at a discounted rate and special offers to anyone who signs up as an IFI Friend. And one lucky person will be selected to win a year of free films at IFI!
