IN FABRIC

Director: Peter Strickland

118 mins, UK, 2018, Digital

This film was released on Friday 28th June 2019 and is no longer screening.

A haunted dress wreaks havoc on a succession of unfortunate owners in Peter Strickland’s highly stylized homage to Italian giallo cinema, the director’s singular fetish for all things analogue being evident in every aspect of the production.

We begin in 1980s London where Sheila (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), a lonely single mother working as a bank teller, is looking for an outfit for a blind date. Lured to the diabolical Dentley & Soper’s department store, she finds a red dress that fits beautifully, but elegance, she soon discovers, comes at a price.

In Fabric, although every bit as intoxicating and disorientating as earlier films Berberian Sound Studio and The Duke of Burgundy, is nevertheless Strickland’s most unabashed genre effort, an archly humorous work, rich in high camp, blood-letting and boasting delightfully ripe performances from a gallery of grotesque characters.
