Tipperary’s Jessie Buckley gets a real chance to shine in this tender country and western drama about a young Glaswegian who sees a way out of her troubled life through becoming a Nashville singing star. Director Tom Harper doesn’t let the underdog action get in the way of Buckley’s singing, which is mesmerising, as she tears her way through family drama, prison, and heartache, while her long-suffering mother (Julie Walters) holds it all together.
