(LA PASSION DE JEANNE D’ARC)

Tony Tracy, lecturer at the Huston School of Film and Digital Media, NUI Galway, will present Carl Theodor Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc,
a truly seminal work of silent cinema. Dreyer based his script on the records of the Maid of Orléans’ trial, condensing events into her final day.

Much of the film’s acclaim rests on the towering central performance of Maria Falconetti. Shot primarily in close-up, Falconetti’s face is the canvas upon which is etched Joan’s suffering and solitude in the face of her accusers, who include dramatist Antonin Artaud as the Dean of Rouen.
