Lisa (the excellent Regina Hall) manages Double Whammies, a Hooters-style, sports-themed café-bar. While neither she nor her more revealingly-dressed colleagues are under any illusions about the nature of their venue, there is a fierce and reciprocal loyalty between workmates.
Over the course of one particularly hectic day, Lisa is forced to deal with any number of workplace problems, including the training of new staff, an attempted burglary that may have been an inside job, a disgruntled employer, and arranging a fundraising carwash for an employee in need of a lawyer, all while navigating the difficulties of her own personal life.
Director Andrew Bujalski, as with previous films Computer Chess (2013) and Results (2015), shows both a fascination and genuine knack for workplace dynamics and drama, creating an elegantly structured, character-driven, and warmly humorous slice-of-life tale, told with genuine empathy.
