IFI SCHOOLS: BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD

Director: Benh Zeitlin

USA • 2012 • Drama/Fantasy • 93 mins

This award-winning film is set in offshore, post- Katrina New Orleans, a place of beauty, life and desperate hardship. Hushpuppy lives with her father, Wink. Together with other survivors they eke out an existence in ramshackle houses that float high above the levees. At one with her surroundings, Hushpuppy feeds pigs and talks to fish. For this tight community, the only time is now, as they figure ways to make do without gasoline or cook a meal from whatever they’ve caught. An extraordinary film, rich in visual storytelling.
