ROCK ‘N’ ROLL CINEMA: I NEED A DODGE! JOE STRUMMER ON THE RUN

Director: Nick Hall

67 minutes, Spain-U.K., 2014, Subtitled, Blu-ray

This film screened on Friday 24th April 2015.

This is Radio Clash! Following the screening, Rob Dawnay will be DJ-ing in the IFI bar, presenting a set featuring rock’n’roll boppers, punk classics, Strummer favourites and more. All are welcome after the film!

In 1984, shortly after the Cut the Crap-era Clash had disintegrated in some acrimony and plenty of critical derision, Joe Strummer sought refuge in Spain, where he threw himself into friendships with people there and devoured the country’s music, even finding time to produce an LP for a rock band from Granada. He told a story, years later, about a car he used to drive around Madrid, was somehow mislaid.

In searching for Strummer’s lost Dodge, filmmaker Nick Hall tells the story of how one of rock’s greatest front men got through a particularly desperate period of his life and how Spanish culture influenced and re-energised him.
