Irish Film Institute -ROBOCOP (IFI EVENING COURSE: IN THEORY)

ROBOCOP (IFI EVENING COURSE: IN THEORY)

Director: Paul Verhoeven

102 mins, U.S.A., Action/Crime/Sci-fi

This film screened on Tuesday 20th  October 2015.

POLITICAL ECONOMY

The original Robocop featured a former cop, killed in the line of action, recreated as a cyborg by the ominous OCP Corporation to clean up dystopic Detroit. Interesting now to watch the original, particularly in the light of the economic devastation caused by the collapse in Detroit’s motor industry.

Framing the classic film within a political economy context, lecturer, writer and reviewer Stephen Boyd will explore how the film set out to critique 1980s corporate capitalism.
