In 1990, as the Soviet bloc crumbles and the Iron Curtain falls, four women struggle with their tangled and unhappy relationships. Agata (Julia Kijowska) has developed an obsessive, impossible love for her priest, causing her to draw away from her husband, with the occasional exception of sex fuelled by anger and despair; Iza (Magdalena Cielecka) has been engaged in a long-term secret affair with a married man who, after the death of his wife, no longer seems interested in her, driving her to irrational behaviour in her attempts to lure him back; and lonely retiree Renata (Dorota Kolak) is fixated on Iza’s sister Marzena (Marta Nierakiewicz), whose husband lives in West Germany. A melancholy portrait of characters suffocated by their desires and need for intimate connection, this beautifully shot film is superbly performed by its leads.

Screening as part of IFI & Kinopolis Polish Film Festival. For more details see the festival homepage.
