KINOPOLIS: AFTERIMAGE (SOLD OUT)

Director: ANDRZEJ WAJDA

98 mins, 2016, Poland, Digital, Subtitled

This film screened 9th December 2016.

Poland’s nomination for the 2017 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, and the final film by the great Andrzej Wajda, Afterimage, a portrait of the final years of noted avant-garde painter Władysław Strzemiński (a spellbinding Bogusław Linda), can be seen as a tribute from one dissident artist to another. However, while Wajda became a figure of international renown, Strzemiński’s life was ruined by the Communist Party, who disapproved of his work and stripped him of all he held dear. Afterimage makes for a suitable end to the career of a filmmaker who never feared using his art to examine the darker chapters of Polish history. (Notes by Kevin Coyne.)

Screening as part of the Kinopolis Film Festival. Full festival programme available here.
