John Behan RHA is Ireland’s best-known living sculptor. He is as busy as ever in his early 80s, with regular exhibitions in Ireland and abroad. In addition to this heavy workload, he feels so strongly about the suffering of refugees around the world that, for a number of years prior to Covid, he travelled to Athens to volunteer at Camp Eleonas, a state-run centre for migrants, where he delivered art workshops to adults. His artistic practice has always dealt with the themes of displacement of people and emigration, and the most celebrated example of his public sculpture is the National Famine Memorial at Murrisk, near Westport. The film was shot between 2020 and 2023.
