A heart-breaking piece of social realism, this adaptation of Eugene O’Brien’s play of the same name captured the unfulfilling underbelly of Ireland’s Celtic Tiger. The story is of Billy (Aidan Kelly) and Breda (Eileen Walsh) Farrell, a couple whose stale marriage is approaching its ten-year anniversary. A dormant sex life is just one symptom of their problems; Billy lusts after young women rather than pay attention to Breda, who herself dreams of having the excitement she enjoyed in her youth. As the gap between the pair widens, their troubles begin to become public knowledge, a shame that this would-be respectable couple could not bear. A host of awards – including the Best Actress Award at the Tribeca Film Festival – followed the film, worthy recognition for the achievement of first-time feature director Declan Recks, who created a film that was stark, painful, and honest.
