In a fictitious trial, twelve members of a jury must decide whether British journalist Ian Bailey is guilty of the murder of French filmmaker Sophie Toscan Du Plantier. Based on real events, the film reconstructs the deliberations of the twelve jury members and presents a case that ultimately invites the viewer to draw their own conclusions. Re-creation looks back at one of the most famous murders in Irish history. On December 20, 1996, Sophie Toscan du Plantier, a successful film and TV producer, was killed while on holiday at her vacation home on the island. Initial investigations yielded no evidence or leads, yet Ian Bailey, a local man, was accused of the crime anyway. The court of public opinion shifted as a speculative narrative began to form around the case. Inspired by Sydney Lumet’s classic 12 Angry Men, Re-creation questions the reality of what happened nearly 30 years ago as a jury debates the real-life facts of the case. Examining truth and bias and how narrative shapes our worldview, the film aims to demonstrate why nobody was ever convicted or punished for Toscan du Plantier’s murder.
