A gripping and assured feature debut from writer-director Peter Young, developed through Northern Ireland Screen’s New Talent Programme, Our House is a tightly wound family thriller that channels simmering resentment into nerve-shredding suspense. Anchored by an outstanding ensemble of emerging Irish talent, the film turns a wake into a battleground, where old wounds and buried grievances resurface with devastating consequences. When recovering addict Nathan (Michael Shea) arrives late for his mother’s funeral, a fraught reunion with his older siblings, Thomas [Andy Doherty] and Patricia (Hannah McClean), quickly reveals why the family has long kept its distance. Any pretence of solidarity collapses when they learn that their mother has divided the family home equally among them, reneging on her promise to leave it solely to Thomas. As the wake unfolds, simmering tensions give way to open hostility, with arguments escalating into manipulation, violence and betrayal. Nathan’s subsequent relapse appears to mark a tragic low point, but events take a far darker turn when he awakens in a room filling with exhaust fumes. Suddenly, a bitter inheritance dispute becomes a fight for survival, and it is clear that someone is willing to go to lethal lengths to claim what they believe is rightfully theirs.
