This year’s One City One Book choice – If Ever You Go: A Map of Dublin in Poetry and Song inspires a richly varied programme of films about Dublin poets and poetry in our two strands, Archive at Lunchtime and From the Vaults. PROGRAMME 2: OÍCHE NOLLAG LE MÁIRE MHAC AN TSAOI Part of the series Nead an Dreolín, James Kelly’s series of short films is a beautifully crafted collection exploring the poetry of six living Irish language poets. A fresh and innovative piece of work, these films interweave image and sound, as beautifully shot contemporary footage combines with carefully selected archive footage, to lyrically and poetically reflect the themes explored in each of the poems. FILM INFO: JAMES KELLY (3 minutes, 2008, Colour) MNEMOSYNE LAY IN DUST MEMORIES OF AUSTIN CLARKE Clarke’s 1966 poem Mnemosyne Lay in Dust is an intensely personal poem is based on Clarke’s own experience of insanity and the months he spent in a mental hospital in Dublin as a young man. This primitive but charming crayon animation tells the allegorical story of a friendship between a little boy and a cold-hearted giant.
