While the characters of Charles Dickens’ novels are very familiar to us, less is known of his private life and secret affair with young actress Nelly Ternan. Ralph Fiennes directs and plays the author as a fame-loving, anxious man, who had huge talent, high ideals and a belief in social equality. Based on Claire Tomalin’s towering biography of the complex and brilliant author, Kristin Scott Thomas plays Nelly’s mother, who aids and abets the affair.
